FLUTE LESSONS

Lesson Format

  • Structure: Private, one-on-one sessions

  • Duration: 1 hour

  • Frequency: Weekly

  • Options: Available in-person or via online instruction

My teaching philosophy centers on bringing music to life through storytelling. I use creative imagery—such as simulating a swimmer’s breath control—to help students naturally develop proper posture and air support. My approach begins with these essential physical mechanics before evolving into nuanced tone development and flexibility, ensuring every student builds a strong, expressive foundation for their flute journey.

RCM Music Theory Lessons

Lesson Format

  • Structure: Small group sessions (2–4 students)

  • Duration: 1 hour

  • Frequency: Weekly

  • Options: Available in-person or via online instruction

The lessons are designed to build well-rounded musicianship in an interactive setting. Using the RCM Celebrate Theory textbooks, we focus on a structured path to mastery:

  • Levels 5–8: 3 months to complete course material.

  • Levels 9–10: 6–8 months to complete course material.

  • ARCT: 8 months to complete course material.

Following the coursework, we dedicate one final month to mock exams and review to ensure students feel fully prepared. Please note that for Levels 5 and above, passing the theory exam is required alongside practical studies to earn a certificate of level completion.

RCM Music History Lesson

Lesson Format

  • Structure: Small group sessions (2–4 students)

  • Duration: 1 hour

  • Frequency: Weekly

  • Options: Available in-person or via online instruction

I bring history to life by using visual aids for analysis and sharing stories that deepen students' appreciation for the repertoire. My goal is to spark curiosity while bridging the gap between historical context and practical performance.

The RCM History curriculum covers three advanced levels (9, 10, and ARCT). Due to the complexity of the material, I recommend 8 months to 1 year for full course completion and exam preparation.

  • Levels 9 & 10: Study of 4 musical eras, including composition analysis and essay writing.

  • ARCT: Study of 2 musical eras and 1 independent research essay.

Classes follow a standard academic format with unit tests after each era. Following the coursework, we dedicate 1–1.5 months to intensive mock exam practice to ensure students are fully prepared for success.

Theory/History Lessons

Is theory required before taking the practical examination?

Comprehensive certification for Level 5 and above requires the completion of both practical and theory exams. While theory must be completed within five years of the practical exam to remain valid for certification, there is no time limit for taking your practical exam once the theory requirement has been fulfilled.

Do I need separate theory lessons for each instrument I play?

"Not at all. Theory requirements are standardized across all instruments. A single completed theory level can be applied toward the certification requirements for any of your practical studies, such as flute or piano."

What should I prepare for our lesson?

Students are responsible for purchasing their own textbooks and level 5-8 practice exam. I will provide practice exams for level 9-ARCT. You will be notified of any additional required materials prior to the commencement of the curriculum.

What is the average time frame for completing a theory level?

While individual progress depends on the student, our typical completion timelines are as follows:

  • Levels 5–8 (Theory): Approximately 3 months.

  • Levels 9–10 (Harmony): Approximately 8 months.

  • Levels 9–10 (History): Approximately 8 months, though this can fluctuate based on a student’s English language proficiency.

Do you offer online or in-person lessons?

I provide both! Lessons are available in person at the studio or online, allowing you the flexibility to choose the setting that best supports your learning journey.
